How to Grow Quality Tomatoes and Get Big Harvests

Tomatoes are among the most profitable vegetable crops in Tanzania, but they demand close management. Here are the key steps to succeed.

1. Choose Quality Seed

Start with hybrid (F1) varieties with disease resistance. Good seed raises yields by 30–50% compared to local varieties. Ask our agronomists which variety suits your area — some perform best in highlands, others in lowlands.

2. Prepare the Nursery Well

• Use seedling trays with clean media (or well-decomposed compost mix).
• Water lightly morning and evening — excess water causes damping-off.
• Seedlings are ready to transplant after 21–28 days with 4–6 true leaves.

3. Transplanting

Transplant in the evening or on a cloudy day to reduce stress. Spacing: 60 cm between rows and 45–50 cm between plants. Place a phosphorus-rich basal fertilizer (DAP or NPK) in the hole before planting.

4. Fertilization and Irrigation

Three to four weeks after transplanting, start top-dressing (nitrogen and potassium). During flowering and fruiting, potassium is key for fruit quality. Irrigate consistently — large fluctuations cause fruit cracking.

5. Prevent Diseases Early

The main tomato diseases are early blight, late blight and bacterial wilt. Apply protective fungicides on schedule, especially in the rains, and rotate chemical groups to prevent resistance. For pests like Tuta absoluta, combine traps with the correct insecticides.

6. Harvest on Time

Pick fruit at breaker stage for distant markets, or ripe for nearby sales. Avoid harvesting in the heat of the day.
