How to Control Destructive Crop Pests
By CHETU AGROSOLUTION · 26 July 2026

Destructive pests can cut yields by over 40% if not controlled early. Good control starts with prevention, not treatment alone.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
1. Cultural Prevention
- Rotate crops — don't plant the same family in the same plot two seasons running.
- Remove crop residues and weeds that harbor pests.
- Plant on time — avoid known outbreak windows.
2. Scouting
Inspect the field at least twice a week. Check under leaves, on shoots and flowers. Use yellow sticky traps to monitor whiteflies and aphids, and pheromone traps for Tuta absoluta and caterpillars.
3. Correct Pesticide Use
- Identify the pest first — an aphicide won't necessarily kill caterpillars.
- Follow the label dose — underdosing breeds resistance.
- Rotate chemical groups (MoA rotation) between cycles to prevent resistance.
- Spray early morning or evening — pests are exposed and bees are few.
- Wear protective equipment (PPE): gloves, mask, boots and overalls.
- Respect the pre-harvest interval (PHI) printed on the label.
Major Pests in Tanzania
- Tuta absoluta (tomato) — combine traps + specific products, remove affected leaves.
- Fall armyworm (maize) — treat early into the plant funnel.
- Whiteflies — spread viruses; control early with traps and sprays.
- Aphids — control before mass multiplication.
Bring photos or samples to the shop — we will identify the pest and give you the right product with full instructions.
